“Technology is our name for stuff that doesn’t work yet.” –Danny Hiller

BopAd has been a universal optimist, in his words, not wanting to see a future that resembles a Rusty Los Angeles but in this last interview in 1999 he’s forced to see the state of things, which are that the explosive growth of the internet was never properly managed or checked for quality!

This is a problem that pervades the software industry; quality is swept out the door. And this is because with the acceptance of the public of Must-Have software, the driving force for a product is the Rush to Market. This is why so many software products are released as beta. It’s also why beta now feels like alpha.

Since the quality assurance department not only is a hinder to this rush to market, it’s not uncommon to see many places only giving a nod to it contracting out to a vestigial QA outfit just to write it down in due diligence reports.

Of course this pretty much is what BopAd is on about:

“If you can’t debug you’re code when you are drunk, then you’ve written it wrong.” – _m

Why the term Crunchhead? Because I admired the character of Richard MacDuff, because not only was he a programmer, but a musician, and a teacher. He was able to take hard concepts and explain them.

Code isn’t a way to tell a machine to do something as much as it is a conversation between the code author and the code maintainer(s). Which is more than likely the author himself, only after a few pints.

After you have to return to work from the pub to fix a crucial bug that has cropped up between check ins that you must fix right away, you will find obfuscation, laziness, and writing code like the cryptic notes between Illuminati only serve to keep you from returning back to the bar.
